Discover 700 years of Dutch History with a ferry round-trip to the medieval Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot 

Forming part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot (incl. ferry) was build in the 13th century by Count Floris V. From the enchanting castle and beautiful gardens to Golden Age-era rooms, Knight's Hall, Armoury and more, there's so much to discover with a visit to Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot (incl. ferry) making it a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike.

Please note: You can reach the Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot by taking the free ferry from Amsterdam or travel to the Castle yourself. The address from where the ferry is leaving is Krijn Taconiskade 124 a, Amsterdam.The Ferry sails from March until October 27th, 2019. Departure is once per day at 11 am, every Tuesday until Sunday (closed on Monday). Return will be around 2.30 pm from the Castle but you will be informed about the exact departure time on the way to the Castle.

Did you know:

  • While out hunting with falcons in 1296, Floris V was captured by his nobles and imprisoned in his own castle. After attempting an escape he was stabbed 20 times and died.
  • The Muiderslot was the official residence of P.C. Hooft  in the 17th century, because he was appointed as sheriff (drost) of Muiden and bailiff (baljuw) of Gooiland in 1609
  • Towards the end of the 18th century, the castle began to be used as a prison before being abandoned and derelict

Towers and Knights

Scale the Castle's impressive towers and learn about its carefully constructed defences from its narrow staircases to dead-end corridors. Climb 83 steps and enjoy amazing views from the rafters of the castle's highest tower, the West Tower. Discover an incredible collection of genuine suits of armour, chain mail, swords, and halberds in the Armoury, and learn about the life and times of medieval knights and their importance to the Castle's history.

The Golden Age

Journey back in time and tour the beautifully-restored Golden Age rooms of the Castle including the living room, bedroom, the Bishop's Room, Castle kitchen, Knight's Hall and Prince's Room. Learn about the castle's occupants during the Dutch Golden Age, including its most famous resident, writer and poet P.C. Hooft. For almost 40 years, Hooft spent summers in the castle and invited friends and intellectuals such as Vondel, Huygens, Bredero and Maria Tesselschade Visscher to stay.


From April to October, guests can visit the falconer and learn all about these beautiful birds of prey and the ancient art of falconry. Enjoy live demonstrations from May to September.
