The Zaan Region is the first industrial area in Europe, powered by the wind.

From the invention of the sawmill by Cornelis van Uitgeest until 1900 there are about 1.100 windmills in this area. They produced for industrial applications like oil, timber and paper and spices. The windmills were very important in the Dutch Golden Age. The windmill museum tells the magnificent story of the Zaan mills. The painting “Molenpanorama”, the largest painting with windmills, by Frans Mars is the most important property of the museum.
